Adoption, Child’s Way®, and the Pediatric Specialty Hospital at The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center
Who We Are?
Established in 1893, the children’s home of Pittsburgh is an independent non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the health and well-being of infants and children through services which establish and strengthen the family.

Our licensed infant ADOPTION program, founded in 1893, provides comprehensive services consistent with our philosophy that adoption is a lifelong journey, not an isolated event. Our Adoption program:
- Has placed more than 7,000 infants and children in permanent homes
- Places an average of 24 infants per year with adoptive families
- Provides free birthparent counseling to more than 170 clients per year by licensed social workers
- Has completed an average of 25 family studies for adoptive families yearly
- Offers interim foster care services by licensed foster care families
- Provides additional services such as: support groups, open adoption mediation, research and reunion services, post adoption counseling, and infertility counseling

CHILD’S WAY® , established in 1998, provides critical medical day care services for up to 60 medically fragile children from birth to age 8. Child’s Way:
- Has served more than 180 children and their families
- Operates Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. with full and part-time enrollment
- Is staffed by registered pediatric nurses and child care associates
- Holds licenses from the Department of Health as the first Pediatric Extended Care Center in Pennsylvania and the Department of Public Welfare as a day care center
- Is reimbursed by third party payors while families are responsible for a low day care rate of $32/day; financial assistance is available for families who qualify
- Facilitates the provision of various therapies, medical procedures, and developmental education on site

Originally founded as Transitional Infant Care (T.I.C.) in 1984, our 28-bed licensed PEDIATRIC SPECIALTY HOSPITAL provides acute care for children ages birth to 21, transitioning from hospital to home. Additionally, our hospital:
- Offers a calm, home-like setting that reduces stress for both children and families
- Is staffed by a multidisciplinary team that includes neonatologists, pulmonologists, transplant specialists, and pediatricians, registered nurses, a licensed social worker, and developmental specialist that work collaboratively to teach families how to care for their child’s distinct medical needs
- Maintains a nurse to patient ratio of 1:3 to provide more individualized attention
- Promotes the active participation of parents in their child’s care during their stay
- Is reimbursed by third-party payors
Our FAMILY LIVING AREA provides our families with amenities to help make our hospital feel more like home. Families can spend time with their infant or child away from the hospital setting in the expanded family living area that includes: bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, full kitchens and dining areas, living rooms, and an Austin’s Playroom for siblings. Free on-site parking and laundry facilities also available.
