St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, is one of the world's premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. St. Jude is the first and only pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Children from all 50 states and from around the world have come through the doors of St. Jude for treatment, and thousands more around the world have benefited from the research conducted at St. Jude - research that is shared freely with the global medical community. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance. No child is denied treatment because of a family's inability to pay.

Working together under one roof, St. Jude's physicians and scientists have pioneered treatments that have helped push the overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to 80 percent today.

The survival rate for the most common form of childhood cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, has risen from just 4 percent in 1962 to 94 percent today.

St. Jude is also making a difference in the fight against other pediatric catastrophic diseases. In addition to childhood cancers, illnesses such as sickle cell disease, blood and bone disorders, genetic diseases, and pediatric HIV/AIDS are among those treated at St. Jude.

Bhangra in the Burgh Grant

In addition to supporting St. Jude, Bhangra in the Burgh V is committed to facilitating the service-based endeavors of the students of Carnegie Mellon University. We hope to establish a grant to support the philanthropy-focused organizations and individuals on campus in their projects, both in Pittsburgh and overseas. Some of the projects in the past have included establishing digital literacy in Rwanda, implementing a self-sufficient agribusiness economy in Panama and helping the sight impaired in India.
